New Year’s Eve Walk to Glenshelane

Fifteen hardy souls decided to shake off the Christmas cobwebs and brave the elements in Glenshelane Woods. We negotiated slippery bridges and limbo-danced under a tree. At the halfway point, leader Norman Graham made the decision to turn back and we went back the way we came. Despite almost incessant rain, the mood was bright, and we all agreed that the walk was a great way to start the New Year.

Sneem Weekend – May 2018

In May, the club will be heading to Sneem in Co. Kerry for our weekend away. The weekend runs from 11-13 May and we’ll be staying at the Sneem Hotel. The cost of this weekend is €149 per person, including two nights B&B and an evening meal. There will be a walk on the Friday afternoon, two walks on the Saturday, and possibly a walk on the Sunday.

Dungarvan Walkers Head for the Beach

The C walk on Sunday 7 January brought the Dungarvan walkers east, to the sandhills of Tramore. The walk was to be led by Elizabeth Twohig, but she was unavailable, so Eileen Barrett ably stepped into the breach. There were fifteen walkers and the walk lasted 2.5 hours. We walked along the Burrows to the Sandhills, and members got a chance to see the Backstrand, one of the hidden jewels of the East Waterford Coast. The weather was cold and crisp, and the walk was an invigorating experience for all.

Sympathies to Tom Fitzgerald

Dungarvan Hillwalking Club would like to extend its sympathies to Tom Fitzgerald and his family on the sad loss of his wife, Anne. Anne gave great service to the club over the years. She helped with the catering in the early years of the Comeragh Crossing and also manned checkpoints on the Pieta House Darkness Into Light walk She also went on a number of club holidays, so she was well known to the members of the club. May she rest in peace.

CANCELLED: Sunday B and C Walks for 21 January

Just to let you know that the B and C walks for Sunday 21 January are both cancelled, as we have received the sad news that Tom Fitzgerald's wife, Anne, has died. Our sympathies go to Tom and his family. Anne was known to the members of the club, as she came on several club holidays. The walks have been cancelled as a mark of respect to Tom, Anne and their family.

Mulled Wine Walk. Walk Report, Richard Dykes

There was an impressive turnout of 45 revellers for the annual Mulled Wine Walk on 17 December. After the walk along the Ardmore Cliffs, they enjoyed great cakes and mince pies made by Ronagh Baumann. Erich Baumann excelled again with his delicious mulled wine. There was also lots of hearty singing to go along with the treats. Thanks to Erich and Ronagh for their time and great work.
