May News Letter

April proved to be a very busy time in the Club with walks taking place in many different areas. On Saturday 11th during the Dungarvan Food Festival, Peter led a large group on a walk in the Knockmealdown Mountains. The regular Sunday B & C Walks on the 12th and 19th went to the various popular spots of the Comeraghs, Mount Mellary and, Mount Stewart.

The Thursday B& C Style walks also went ahead and as always enjoyed a hot cuppa and a cake at the end.

Killarney

The main event of the month was the Club's annual April Weekend away. This year, the beautiful Kerry town of Killarney was the chosen venue and by all accounts was a huge success.

Darkness into light walk.

 On the 9th May a walk for Pieta House will take place, starting at 04.15 from thSt. Augustines Secondary School. If anyone would like to be a steward on the day, please contact Ted. 

Kiltipper Ramblers 

A Dublin walking group are staying in Rathgormack on the weekend of 23rd / 24^th May and contacted us for some joint walks and local knowledge.Details on walk sheet. Please try and join us.

Comeragh Crossing. 

The Annual Comeragh Crossing will take place on the 4th July. Any club members who would like to help on the day, please contact one of the committee. We can all do our bit to make this event the success it has always been. We are looking for check point marshals and stewards.

Cunnigar Crossing. 

Supporting the Dungarvan Lions Club the Annual Cunnigar Crossing will take place on August 2nd. The departure time will be announced nearer the date as it all depends on those tides!!. After the walk, we will repair to Tig an Ceoil Pub for refreshments and collection for the Lions Club. Remember to bring along a change of foot wear as it can get very mucky. 

Tenerife Holiday 

The Annual Holiday Abroad in September this year is to Tenerife. This was the destination of the very first club holiday abroad. As it's the 20th Anniversary of the Club, it was decided to pay a return visit. Some great walking is planned so get your name down, get in touch with a committee member for more details.

APRIL NEWS LETTER

SAINT PATRICKS DAY WALK TO SLIABH na mBAN.

The Club made its annual trek up to the fabled Sliabh na mBan on Saint Patricks Day. 26 walkers reached the top of the mountain and sang " Sliabh na mBan as hailstones fell on them. When the hailstones stopped a group photo was taken. Then they made their way down and headed for Kilcash Castle where they gorged on chicken drumsticks, sausages and delicious cakes and buns. All washed down with hot coffee and tea. After the picnic they retired to the local pub for further refreshments.

SEPTEMBER HOLIDAY. (Members Only)

The venue for the annual September getaway has changed and we are now going to Tenerife. You can get information about the holiday from Tony Fitzgerald (087 2588171) or from the web site.

Cunnigar Crossing.( All Welcome)

The walk will be held on Sunday August 2nd. The departure time from Dungarvan will be published nearer the date as it all depends on the tides. Don't forget to wear old walking shoes and a change of clothes. It can get muddy.

MERCYHURST COLLEGE.

A very warm welcome to the staff and students of MERCYHURST COLLEGE, ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, some of whom joined us on a recent walk. Dungarvan is twinned with the town of Erie and each year students and staff from the faculty come here to study and take in the sights. Lets hope they enjoy their stay with us and will come along on more walks.

FOOD FESTIVAL WALK. SATURDAY APRIL 11th. THE KNOCKMEALDOWNS.

TIME; 11am -3pm. Meeting Point: Opposite the Park Hotel. Dungarvan,

Travel with your own transport from the meeting point to the Vee. (approx 30 minutes) and then enjoy being guided by Dungarvan Hill Walking Club on a scenic route, overlooking 4 counties. ROUTE. Circa 7 kilometers. Approx 4 hours. Boots and wet weather clothing essential. Feel free to bring a packed snack and water. Each walker under 18years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Not suitable for under 14 years.

Meeting Point for the B & C walks will be opposite the Park Hotel as the TSB Car Park will be very busy due to the Food Festival.

March News Letter

DUNGARVAN HILL WALKING CLUB 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS,

On the 3rd February 2015, a special Club meeting was held in the Tudor House as part of the celebrations to mark the formation of the Club in 1995. The present Committee sent out invitations to both the founders and past club members to attend the meeting. Almost 40 people turned up on the night, past and present members coming together to reminisce about the past 20 years. Richard Dykes, the present Chairman had organised a slide show of past walks, meetings,and holidays, to entertain those present. What about those hairdos!!

 FIRST WALK. February 1995

 The first walkers met outside Lawlors Hotel at 2.30 pm sharp, and Colligan woods was the location for a walk of 6 miles in length. Leaflets of several pages were produced for individual walks.

Back in 1995, the Club offered Fitness, Friendship Fun and that has not changed in this year of 2015. Following the presentation by Richard, a delicious celebratory cake was cut and along with tea, coffee and mouth-watering buns made by the Club Secretary, Catherine Hayes, a great time was had by all.

7^th April Club night has a wildlife and mountain photographic presentation with Mario Mac Rory from Muddy Boots Trekking.

KILLARNEY WEEKEND.

February News Letter

KILLARNEY WEEKEND.

The Club have chosen Killarney as the venue for this year’s April walking weekend. The dates are from 17th -19th at the Castlerosse Hotel. You can choose to stay for 3 nights with 2 evening meals for Euro 169 or 2 nights plus 1 evening meal for Euro 115. Money to be paid in full by March 6th.The original date was changed as the Dungarvan Food Festival is being held the weekend before. A Festival not to be missed. See Richard or Peter to book.

LAKE DISTRICT HOLIDAY.

The dates for the Lake District holiday have yet to be confirmed as we wait for flight information to be confirmed. The dates will be either SEPTEMBER 6-13th or 13th-20th. The flights will be from Cork to Manchester. Tony Fitzgerald is organising the holiday.

20th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS BBQ.

A BBQ is being held in Marie Jennings house on SATURDAY 18th July as part of the 20th Anniversary celebrations of the foundation of the Club. Please bring your own food and drink.

SEMRA QUIZ.

A quiz night to raise fund for SEMRA will be held on the 6th March at 8pm in the Tudor House Dungarvan. Norman Graham will be the Quiz Master for the night. More info on Mountain Rescue at  www.semra.ie

At the recent committee meeting, Richard read a letter from the Dungarvan Lions Club thanking everyone for all their hard work fund raising for the Club.

DUNGARVAN HILLWALKING CLUB JANUARY NEWS LETTER

Wishing members a Happy and Healthy new year

CHRISTMAS PARTY.

The annual Christmas party held in the Dungarvan Tennis Club on the 20th December was a great success. Many thanks to everyone who made it such a fun filled night.

ARDMORE MULLED WINE & MINCE PIE WALK. December 21st.

Despite a late night for some following the Christmas Party the night before, a great crowd turned out on the day to make this a most enjoyable event. The club raised over 400 Euros for the Dungarvan Lions Club which was presented to Mr Shay O' Connor, President of the Dungarvan Lions Club. Mr O' Connor thanked the club for their generosity.

As we gathered around to enjoy our mulled wine and mince pies after our walk, an eerie sound was heard in the distance. Then from the mist, a tall figure emerged, dressed splendidly in full regalia playing a glorious set of bag pipes. David Byrne entertained us all with some traditional Christmas Carols. Thus ending a most enjoyable day for us all. Many thanks to all those who organised the event, those who brought mulled wine, mince pies, cakes, teas and coffees etc.Thanks also to John Brown who lead the walk.

DECEMBER 28th Walk.

Following the walks, both B and C walkers gathered in the Tudor House Bar to enjoy a well earned bowl of soup and bread rolls. Many thanks to the owner, Mr. Declan Ahearne for looking after us all so well.

NEW YEARS DAY WALK

Despite the dreadful weather conditions on the day, a brave group of 9, led by John Brown, ventured forth to the beautiful are of Glenshelane to enjoy the first walk of 2015. John told me that it was overcast with some drizzle, but this did not spoil the day. Well done to all.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL C WALK.25^th January.

Barrows, stone circles and Fulachtal Fia around Araglin Valley. Not a demanding a walk, but more of a recognising and finding Stone/Bronze age features.

KILLARNEY TRIP.

A weekend in Killarney is being organised as part of the 20^th Anniversary of the founding of the club. The provisional date is 10^th to 12^th April. (Weekend after Easter.)

Dungarvan Hillwalking Club. November News Letter.

C walk Sunday 9^th November.

Kevin Moore led 23 of us to visit the Comeragh Lakes. On arrival, he decided to alter course, as underfoot conditions were not to his satisfaction, and headed instead to the Sgilloges.

We made our way in orderly fashion towards the lake, receiving a few short breaks, and arrived to beautiful sunshine. During coffee break, Kevin explained the history of the area, including the Seanbhean agus an Píoba (all understood except brit Caitriona)

We headed back and Kevin was worried as daylight was fading. Tom Murphy, sweeping, asked some ladies to ease up on the talk, but to no avail, but amazingly, the talk increased but so did speed of walk. Tom suggested we change the name of the club to The Talking Club but no takers. Needless to say, we arrived back safely, and seriously, a great days exercise was had by all, and good to see a few new members present also. Buíochas to Kevin.

14^th November Night Walk
A brave group of 6 ventured onto the mountain at 18:00 on a dark cold and very wet under foot walk. The idea was to experience walking on mountainous terrain in the dark and to see how different everything looks at night. At the Carraigaline mast we turned off our torches and experienced the eerie calm and blackness, with only the distant lights of the surrounding villages to give us any orientation. A short walk but a great experience, which will be repeated next year.

Congratulations to all club members who supported and completed the Long Way Round night walk on the 29th. A great night was had by all.

Sunday 30^th November

A dozen set off last Sunday, rucksacks bursting with gear, hot drinks and tucker, for a day that started off at minus 2 degrees. We were in for a pleasant surprise though; it was pleasantly warm with clear blue skies and barely a breeze in it. Some were heard complaining about how the bright sun was impeding their vision…isn’t that a great complaint for late November.We started off not far from Mountmellary and proceeded to the Liam Lynch Memorial where we sat on the low wall in front of a sculpture of cast bronze Irish Wolfhounds. We ate our lunch and as always dining al fresco is wonderful. We then progressed by climbing up to Cruachan West stopping to take in the views. Tom then lead us on to Knockmeal and it was from there we began our trek downwards and back to the cars for five minutes, before the obligatory stop-off at the Cats Bar. What a lovely end to a great day. Thank you Tom.

“A Walk For All The Seasons” Sgilloge Loughs-Coum Lara Horseshoe Walk.

Oct saw our intrepid “C” walkers back in the Comeraghs to walk the 11Km. Sgilloges/Coum Lara circuit. Our walk started in the beautiful, incomparable Nire Valley, where it is said, “it is easier to walk than not to walk”. A valley that is serenaded night and day by the tall cliffs and many streams that flow into the Nire river. We followed the pathway that leads from Whelan’s farm and out onto the open bogland and the townsland of Carrigeen. This is an area rich in archeological history, with up to 15 sites of interest, with old huts, earthworks, fulacht fiadh and the Carrigeen Standing Stone, considered to be one of the finest examples of its type in Munster. From here we walked the waymarked  pathway into the upper lake of the Sgilloges in glorious sunshine, with the Sean Bean stream, which flows down from the steep cliffs of the sandstone rock of the ridge, forming a perfect backdrop. The heavy rainfall of the previous 3 days, and the northerly winds made it an impressive sight, whipping the water upwards onto the platue above. After a short break we climbed the gentle slopes out over the shoulder to the east of the lake, and contoured into Coum Lara, crossing the fast flowing stream that flows out of the Coum. From there, we crossed over open bogland and heather covered boulders to arrive at The Gap and join up with Boreen an Socraid/The Funeral Path. To the northwest, Knockanaffrin Ridge rises majestically, and away in the distance we had a clear view of Slievenamon, whilst to the south, the steep climb onto Carrigshaneun looked imposing. Throughout the 19th century, and indeed into the early part of the 20th. century, the Boreen an Socraid path provided families who lived on both sides of the valley with safe and easy passage, and in 1930, locals witnessed the last funeral procession to cross the mountain track with the remains being taken from Rathgormack to the Nire. As daylight began to fade, the group headed back the pathway, to arrive back at the Nire Carpark in glorious winter sunset. A pleasing feature of the walk was the number of walkers who crossed the route for the first time, and it was great to see new members out in the mountain in such high numbers, so why not encourage a friend to join the club and experience for themselves the beauty of the Comeraghs.
