Christmas Party a Swinging Success 

Thanks to the committee for giving us members a swinging night at the Tennis Club for our Christmas party on 12 December. More than 40 souls braved the bad weather and enjoyed festive fare, followed by several hours of dancing, singing and carousing. Sausages and chips made a welcome appearance just after midnight. We all appreciate the dedication of the committee for organising the caterers and DJ, making the room festive and clearing it up afterwards. A special shout out to those who provided delicious deserts on the night – we savoured every morsel. 

Mulled Wine and Mince Pies in Ardmore 

The festive fun didn’t stop at the Christmas party. On 20 December, we made our annual trip to Ardmore for the Mulled Wine and Mince Pies walk. The weather gods gave us respite from the relentless rain and we walked along the cliffs in brilliant sunshine. There was a celebrity wedding en route which we stopped to gawk at. There were valiant, enthusiastic attempts to sing carols. Santa hats were worn by some. Thanks to all who made mulled wine, mince pies and other treats, which were sampled with gusto. 40 walkers took part and they raised €219 for the Lions Club when a bucket was passed around after the walk. 

Club Holidays and Outings 

Ireland is full of fabulous walks and we’ll be exploring some of them in Wicklow, for the annual club weekend away from 22-24 April. We’ll be staying at Lynam’s of Laragh, and the price for two nights B&B and an evening mean is €130. Book your place with any member of the committee, as that trip is a hot ticket.   

Update to Facebook Page

For those who have embraced the 21^st century, Dungarvan Hillwalking Club has a healthy presence on Facebook. There is a page for the general public called Dungarvan Hillwalking Club, and a group for members and prospective members called Members of Dungarvan Hillwalking Club. The Official Dungarvan Hillwalking Club and Supporters of Comeragh Crossing Facebook pages have now been deleted, but those who were on the previous pages are welcome to join the new ones. You'll find them by typing their names into the search box on Facebook.

Walks are usually 4 to 6 hours. C Walks are about 3 hours. Inclement weather is likely to extend the time of all walks. Hillwalking is an adventure sport and not devoid of an element of risk. To minimize risk, be prepared: waterproof boots, rucksack, waterproofs, a packed lunch, hot drink, warm hat, gloves etc.  Mountaineering Ireland (MI) recognizes that participants in Hillwalking should be aware of and accept any risk and be responsible for their own actions and involvement                                    REMEMBER NO BOOTS, NO WALK

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS.

After the Melleray Walk  on the 3^rd, a visit to the “CATS” for refreshments and  then Santa has agreed at 1830hrs to let us visit his Grotto  at the “Melleray Winter Wonderland” for tea & cakes in the Marquee (donation req’d) Please note: This is only for Members  who have been good all year ! “Christmas Hats Essential” 

THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY for club members will be held on the 12th December in the Dungarvan Tennis & Bowls Club. Please contact a committee member if you want to buy a ticket for this fun event.Good Food, Good Entertainment, Good Company.

 ARDMORE MULLED WINE AND MINCE PIE WALK.                       C Style Walk.

The annual Ardmore Walk will be held on the 20th December at 1400 hrs meeting at the Park Hotel. This is a fund raising event for the Dungarvan Lions Club and we hope to see as many people as possible come along to make this event a great success again this year. Don't forget to bring along your Euros, a funny Christmas Hat and very warm clothes. 

Don’t Forget.              After the Sunday walks a bit of a gathering usually takes place in the Tudor House, to discuss the finer points of the day’s walking. Everyone welcome from 4pm.

Walk Report. 1st November

"PURE MAGIC" a Walk in the Comeragh Mountains.

The fog was down to the water’s edge in Dungarvan harbour when 6 brave hill walkers gathered, expecting a foggy walk with no visibility. We drove to the Nire Car Park and started walking the track towards the Gap in a complete blanket of fog. As we approached the Gap, the fog started to clear and we could see, higher up on Carrignagower, that it was blue sky and sunshine peeking out through the fog. We climbed through the fog and within 5 minutes we broke out into the bluest sky and sunshine. The clearest day of sunshine so far.

Off in the distance, we could see nothing but the " Shaving Foam Clouds"all the way until they were interrupted by the "Knockmealdowns"to the West, "Galteemore" further West," Silvermines" North West," Slievenamon" to the North and" Mount Leinster to the North East. (50 Kms away!!) It was like flying over the Alps in a plane except we were in the Comeraghs!! We continued onto the Boole Cairn and stopped for lunch dining in T-Shirts and sunglasses- a warm breeze gently blowing. We then continued to the top of Coumshingaun. But looking in, we saw nothing but a Coum full of fog/cloud -Shaving Foam!! From there we crossed the black bog and as we dropped into the fog, it retreated back down to the falls as the hot sun burnt off the fog. As we cleared the the black bog, the fog again crept its way back up the valley, covering the area we had just crossed "PURE MAGIC". We then dropped back down into the Scilloges, into the fog, with visibility back down to 5 meters and back to using compass, GPS and maps all the way to the Nire Car Park.!!              ONE MAGICAL DAY OF HILL WALKING.       Donal O' Mahoney

Ten walkers faced milk hill in the Monavullagh mountains on Sunday.

Just over 12Kms and a maximum height of 600m.

Great views of the Nire valley, Seefin and down towards Dungarvan.

The Thursday Afternoon Walkers

Elizabeth Twohig led a group of twenty three walkers to Ballyscanlon
and Carrigavrantry Lakes near Fenor on Thursday 29rd October 2015.
The route ran over the high ground between the lakes with views west
towards Helvic and the Comeraghs, then through the woods to
Ballyscanlon, and along laneways beside Carrigavrantry to the small
megalithic tomb in the same townland, a four thousand year old burial
site of the Early Bronze Age.

The planning for the Christmas Celebration 2015 is under way.

Tickets will be on sale soon at a cost of €25.

Weekend away

We are hoping to arrange a walking weekend away in the Wicklow Mountains on the 23^rd / 24^th April 2016.

I will be looking for people prepared to lead B & C walks. If you can help please let me know.

If you feel the need to lead a walk, please don’t wait to be asked, volunteer your services to a coordinator.

Away day walks

If you have a location for a walk just out of our usual area please let us know, we have one so far and will organising it for a Saturday or Sunday in January. Feel free to lead one yourself and we will help.

Walk report on Seven Sisters Walk lead by Monica Corcoran.

This was a very interesting walk lead by experienced walk leader Monica Corcoran. Despite the inclement weather a hardy group of seven club members completed the walk. Well done to everyone who braved the elements and stayed the course. After togging out in our wet gear we walked from the upper car park at Mahon Falls following a course set by our leader. Along the way we met some walkers from the Kilmacthomas club, other than that we had the mountain to ourselves. Lunch was at the Seven Sister lakes and coffee never tasted so well. Our return route took us by Ned Curran’s cottage, a beautiful spot in the Comeragh’s that never fails to invoke the imagination on life in bygone days.

Happy to say we all returned to our cars wet and weary but in good spirits after a good walk and looking forward to a hot shower and a hot toddy.

Post AGM Events

We are looking for B & C walk leaders to do night walks of no more than 3 hours duration on familiar ground in November and December.  Guidance and assistance on the night can be arranged.  Contact the new walk coordinators.
